Well if you don’t mind swarms of mosquitos enveloping you for your summer activities, or doing your winter activities when it’s constantly -10 to -40 out, then sure, Fairbanks is better. I would hike flattop up in the Chugach mountains that border east Anchorage and also wander around Kincaid park. Make sure to have bear spray on any hikes you go on. Pro: Amazing views. Anchorage feels very open for the amount of people that live here (compared with similar size cities in the lower 48), which means not a lot of traffic, and places rarely feel crowded. Anchorage has a small town feel in a mid-size city (just over 300k). Cons: not much to do if you are not an avid outdoorsman.That said, Alaska is still pretty much my favorite place on Earth, especially the Kenai peninsula south of Anchorage. I absolutely adored the town of Seward, but that's 2.5+ hour drive from ANC. If you have the time, I'd highly recommend a couple days in Seward. A bit closer to ANC, the town of Girdwood is just a 50 minute drive.
